Make Your Perfect Golf Swing Every Shot

Author: Dafydd Johnson  |  Category: Blog Posts

We’re all low handicap golfers on the range, so because we’re making a perfect golf swing over and over again, as soon as we get to the course we should be expecting a better golf swing right? WRONG. Sadly even though consistency isn’t a problem on the range, for most of us replicating this consistency when faced with the ultimate test of 18 holes it all goes wrong.

The sad thing is when you get one of those rounds where everything goes right, you’ve taken all the golf swing advice, golf swing tips, and golf swing techniques and put them to good effect, but then you reach the crutch of the game and your bottle goes. The saying “golf is a game of six inches” could never ring truer at this point.

Develop your golfing mind

To really master the game you’ve got to practise, practise, and practise some more, but that’s not all. To make the most of our abilities we need to be in the right frame of mind. It’s a fact that a calm focused mind will enhance focus which will make you more likely to make your perfect golf swing while on the course. If you are able to reach the right mind state then varying conditions and opponents will be easier to overcome. When your mind is completely focused all other distractions tend to fade away, at this point during the swing there is only now – past and future disappear.

Get in your optimum golfing zone

When your emotions get in the way of how you play, it makes it more difficult to get ‘in the zone’, it takes the ability to control anxiety or anger at yourself if you are ever going to execute your perfect golf swing on the course. The state of flow needed to produce the perfect golf swing requires a calm focus that can be difficult to tap in to.

I personally used to struggle with maintaining focus and even when playing well always expected the worst which hindered the level of focus I was able to apply to each shot. Now when I’m on the course I can go from chatting with my friends to laser-like focus instantaneously.

The perfect golf swing gets you focusing on the process of your golf swing and not on the potential outcome. In this state of mind outcomes and results hold no value in which to fear, it just maintains a sharp, high level of focus on what you’re are doing. Developing The Perfect Golf Swing

The perfect golf swing in terms of a 100 percent full proof blueprint that could apply to every golfer the same is an urban myth, anybody that tells you otherwise aren’t being truthful. The likelihood of replicating a swing like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Sergio Garcia is not a realistic target for most of us, however developing a golf swing that we can apply hole in hole out to gain the best possible score is very much a possibility, and so is this not the perfect golf swing? The answer of course is yes as this kind of practise will maximise any individual’s ability rather than a constant quest for a better golf swing that corrupts progress rather than refining results.

The discovery of my perfect golf swing

For all the years I had been playing golf people had told me that my ability didn’t reflect my handicap, and to be honest it’s how I felt (I’m sure we all feel like that sometimes). My handicap fluctuated between 21 and 22 for the three golfing seasons before I developed the swing that enabled me play to a much higher level on a consistent basis. The problem was that I was trying everything and wasn’t focusing on the most important fundamentals of the golf swing. Rather than listening to solid theory and the right golf swing advice, I was trying to find a miracle solution from youtube and golf online in general. I found that my journey to the perfect golf swing started when I invested in taking lessons that actually got me back to basics, focused on the most important aspects of the swing and didn’t preach a miracle cure. This particular package gave me the insight to start again, and what I found to my surprise was that a lot of what I was doing was right; it was a case of tweaking certain elements rather than a complete overhaul. There is one other product that I would recommend as the content was flawless; however I recommend this as only a product that should be purchased after you’ve already developed a consistent swing. If this applies to you then the material in this book will give you an edge if practised regularly, the material is sound and comes from the wisdom of the highly successful PGA professional Gene Littler. Practise, practise, practise!

The key to making that consistent swing is of course practise. Like most things, you get out of golf what you put in, and no amount of golf swing tips are going to help you improve without you going out there and swinging the club. The turning point in my success was learning to love practising, go with friends, make it fun i.e. putting tourney’s, it doesn’t have to be a grind, however winning the Sunday Medal isn’t a bad feeling.

Take care and stick with it!

Step By Step Golf Swing

Getting back to basics, clearing your head and just taking a swing acknowledging the basic fundamentals of the golf swing in my opinion is the best way to make a better golf swing. Learning a step by step golf swing is one of the easiest ways to make a general improvement to your game and take another step towards making the perfect golf swing, tailored to how you play the game.

You may be asking yourself, “How does this apply to me?”

The step by step solution can mean many different things to each and every golfer, but what I take from it personally, is that it is the practise of a set routine to make consistent golf shots time and time again. That could be focusing on grip, posture, ball position, takeaway, downswing and maybe even impact; however to each individual this method could apply differently. The philosophy behind this method questions a set perfect golf swing that can apply to all players, and supports the idea that the perfect golf swing will be different to each individual in order to maximise their ability.

By taking this “back to basics” approach, you can really unearth what parts of the swing require more attention, and what you’re already doing well. Remember that for most of us the swing doesn’t need a complete overhaul, just a few changes.

Let me break it down for you

You can break a swing down into setup, takeaway, downswing, impact and follow through, some or all of these fundamentals you’ll already have a good understanding of.  Keeping it simple like this will inevitably help you make a more consistent better golf swing. It will become the system that you follow every time you make a golf swing, treat this system like the ultimate swing trainer, and by all means seek expert advice, even take golf lessons, but learn and understand the theory behind it.

The benefit of committing to the basics

I can tell you from my own experience that the quickest route to hitting a straighter more consistent shot, is by practising the basics religiously and developing your own unique routine. If you try to incorporate every golf swing guru’s golf swing tips, golf swing advice and golf swing techniques that you take in while researching golf online or learning from fellow players, then you can expect horrible results and will become very inconsistent in the way you play.

Keep working on it and it will come eventually

Be persistent, give it time, a simple golf swing may sound like a pipe dream, but it doesn’t have to be once you set up your golf swing method one step at a time. Your aim is to become repeatable and keep it basic enough that you know your swing like the back of your hand. If your sceptical then take one look at Tom Watson, he’s been utilising the same swing over a career where he’s won eight majors and twenty eight tournaments, and if you watch him swing today it’s the same golf swing that he’s used for the past forty years or so. Just remember the goal is to not have to rely on swing thoughts, just a sound method you’ve devised that works.

My Journey Into Golf

Author: Dafydd Johnson  |  Category: Blog Posts

Hi, I’m Dafydd and have been passionate about the game of golf all of my life; I caddied at the Old Course for many years and even in the Dunhill Links Championship. While I play the game to a high standard and enjoy shooting low scores; the memory of struggling regularly on the course is still fresh in my mind. I currently play of a handicap of three, however roughly a year ago after a lifetime of practise I played to a handicap of twenty one.

The problem was that although I played a lot and practised regularly I wasn’t able to settle, I was always looking for a better golf swing. I would regularly research golf online, for example by watching you tube golf lessons, and regularly listening to any golf swing advice that “golf swing gurus” on the web had to offer, however with all the conflicting theories and tips on how to improve my golf swing I felt like all I was doing was confusing my game rather than improving it, and getting further away from my target of developing the perfect golf swing suited to me.

Many times in my efforts to improve my game I resigned myself to the idea that playing recreational golf to a decent standard was good enough to enjoy the game, however the overwhelming desire to want to put together a good score inspired me to take golf lessons with my clubs golf pro and work hard on certain effective golf swing techniques.

You can’t imagine the joy I experienced when I finally cracked it, course management, keeping the right psychological approach throughout a full eighteen holes that manifested in my lowest score of 73 on the Old Course St. Andrews.

There is an ocean of people who play the game which have never had the benefit of direction and like me have struggled with identifying the fundamentals that will improve and have the best impact on their golf game. This blog is dedicated to every individual out there that truly loves the game of golf and wants to take their ability to the next level, however while the pursuit of improving our golf games is fun, it’s no substitute for the joy that the game brings at any level.

I now play to a consistent high standard, and I’ve never been happier.
